On 25th September 2019, MWLD hosted a “Women in Law” educational event at 7 Harrington Street. Attendees were welcomed with some snacks and drinks before we heard from our four guest speakers.
We heard from Laura Samaroo, Senior Lecturer at LJMU about how to move from being in practice to working within the education sector. Laura focused on her own experience and opened up what she enjoyed about lecturing and what she also missed from practising.
HHJ Christine Bispham discussed imposter syndrome, what this is and what this involves. She also touched upon her own experiences and provided many people in the room with the reassurance that there are famous people suffering from this including the President of the Supreme Court Lady Hale!
We then heard from Alison Lobb, Managing Partner of Morecrofts who focused on her career path and discussed with us her experience of transitioning from practice into management. Alison provided us with great advice on how to make this transition if this was something anyone was considering.
The evening was closed with a talk from Christine Millan, Associate Solicitor at O’Connors who was awarded the Rising Star Award at the Liverpool Law Society’s Legal Awards in May 2019. Christine is involved with the Black Lawyers Matter Project in Manchester and is setting up the Legal Step Up Programme based in Merseyside. The Programme is aimed to wider participation into the legal sector by providing workshops to schools and youth organisations to inform them of the opportunities and careers in law.
We would like to thank everyone who attended the event who would probably agree that the evening was filled with interesting talks. We would also like to thank 7 Harrington Street for allowing us to host this event at their Chambers.
On Thursday 29th August 2019, R&H Wines treated us to a selection of fine wines with the perfect cheeses to accompany them. The event was hosted at City Wine Bar and was sponsored by Weselyan.
Wine 1 - Le Moss
A prosecco with hints of apple, pear and freshly baked bread. Light, crisp and organic.
Wine 2 - Maisas Branco
A Portuguese white which is handpicked and organic. This acidic blend of 3 grapes really makes the mouth water.
Wine 3 - Fabrizio Vella
A natural white indigenous to Sicily. An almost buttery taste made with a grape grown on volcanic soil.
Wine 4 - Felicette Grenache Blanc
An organic white from France with tropical flavours of mango and lychee.
Wine 5 - Fabrizio Bella Rosso Organico
An oaky Sicilian with dark chocolate notes.
Wine 6 - Vivir Sin Dormir
A Spanish red roughly translated to "to live without sleeping" is oaked and robust. The grapes are still occasionally pressed by foot.
Wine 7 - Odfjell Armador
A Chilean grape by a Norwegian winemkaer which tastes of liquorice and blackberry.
Wine 8 - Porto Niepoort
Three years in a wooden barrel results in this sweet port which is wine with added brandy!
We would like to thank everyone who attended this event and a special thanks to R&H Wines, City Wine Bar and Weselyan.
On 25th July 2019 the MWLD hosted a Gin & Beer Tasting event at Love Lane Brewery.
We would like to say a big thanks to 7 Harrington Street for sponsoring our event.
Guests arrived at 6pm and received tokens for 2 drinks and 3 beer or gin tasters. We had an introduction to the brewery just before 7pm which followed with a tour of the Gin Distillery and Brewery. The tour was informative as we discovered the history of Love Lane beers and their brewery.
After discovering how their beer is made, each guest took part in either a gin/beer tasting session. There was also a fun filled quiz following the tour and guests were provided with clues along the way.
At 8pm guests received proper chip butties, spinach, chickpea and sweet potato sausage rolls and buttermilk fried chicken with fried onion mayo. We then finished off the night announcing the winner of the Quiz, Joshua Baker who received a Love Lane Brewery voucher entitling him to a 3 course meal, gin or beer tasting session and a tour of the brewery for two people. There were also smaller prizes of prosecco, free drinks and free tasters given away by a draw to some luckily winners.
Thanks to all those who attended this fantastic event!
We held our Welcome Event on 27th June 2019 at City Wine Bar.
The Committee would like to thank everyone who attended the event which gave an opportunity for people to join WLD and for existing members to renew their membership. The guests enjoyed glasses of prosecco accompanied by mini burgers, onion bhajis and arancini balls. We would like to thank City Wine Bar for being a brilliant venue.
